Pest and vermin control in Cheshire, Lancashire and Manchester has seen a lively and brisk start this year which is somewhat surprising given the somewhat cold (weather of this last winter|winter of 2009/10}.
Pest and vermin operatives were kept occupied with the usual city centre rodent problems during the winter of 2009/10, but the relatively cold early spring has already seen ant infestations reported.
The damp summers of 2008 and 2009 were not to the benefit of the hymenoptera (sawflies, wasps, ants & bees) but this year looks like it is going to be a busy year for ant calls.
Usually ants build their nests under the floors of houses and inside cavity walls causing an army of foraging ants to enter food store areas.
However it is at the mating time when they are at their most distressing as they produce winged queens and males which then mate on the wing.
The appearance of many thousands of these flying ants inside your house can be horrific indeed.
A somewhat new pest was quite prevalant in the Cheshire, Lancashire and Manchester area last season, the Varied Carpet Beetle (Anthrenus verbasci).
It was rare for pest controllers in Manchester, Cheshire and Lancashire to deal with these pests until recent times but they seemed to arrive from nowhere in 2008 and already this March has seen reports of these beetles in large numbers.
These insects have a similar life cycle to moths their larvae, known as woolly bears devour natural fibres and can do a great deal of damage to carpets and some fabrics. They can be a difficult and persistent pest to get rid of.
Those involved in pest control note that Bed Bugs are continuing their resurgence in the Cheshire, Lancashire and Manchester area, often arriving as hitch-hikers in the suitcases of returning travellers.
Regularly the first reaction of those unfortunates who realise that they are infested with these revolting,blood-sucking insects is to burn the old beds and get.
This is a costly mistake as despite their name bed bugs do not just hide in beds and in an infested bedroom will be found anywhere within about five metres of the bed, in cupboards, drawers etc, even in electrical sockets and the new beds will be quickly re-infested.
Most people mistake bed bugs with dust mites which are not visible to the naked eye. They both a different method of gatley pest control.
They dine just on blood which they drink from their sleeping hosts. People regularly associate bed bugs with dirty conditions but nothing could be less accurate, they do not require grime, they eat you!
